Hello Jeff
More than likely the blend door motor is bad, this is a fairly common problem. The replacement part runs about $50.00 and is available at most part stores.

Don't want to sound like an idiot but don't I need to have the system discharged by a professional prior to checking the orifice tube? This doesn't sound like something I can do myself.

Thanks for the advice thusfar. I appreciate you getting back to me so quickly. I've removed some of the plenum on the passenger side as well as the center console in search of the blend door motor. Could you guide me to where it is? Is it behind the A/C switches in the dash or elsewhere? I've also checked the vaccuum lines and solenoids and they all seem fine. Thank you again for your help!

That would be the acceptable way not releasing 134 into atmosphere. And using a profesional maybe the way to go cause there a chance evaporator can be damaged if orfice not properly handled.

It is located on the side of the plenum, has a plug with about 5 or 6 wires going into it.

Not to be rude, but wasn't that what I asked on my previous post."Is this something that I can fix myself or should I go to a professional?" If I hadn't read in Haynes about discharging the system prior to checking the orifice tube screen, who knows what could have happened. Your post at 12:10 to my previous post said nothing about discharging the system. You only said I needed a special tool and that a parts house should have it. Thanks for the information that you provided but I probably could have had a free A/C check at a local shop and gotten the same info.

I just finished fixing the vacuum hose problem that is common on Astros-- causing no air through dash vents. I pulled the dash and the doghouse, replaced the entire small vacuum line as, well as line from T connection to the vacuum ball. I have LOTS of air flow now-- BUT, now it's not cold. It was plenty cold before I 'fixed' it and the rear air worked great. Now neither front or rear is cold. I'm guessing I disturbed a wire somewhere. The compressor seems to kick on OK and you can hear the stronger airflow when switch is in MAX position-- but it's not cooling. Any help? There is a wire connection on the top of the doghouse that I unplugged when removing it. Of course I plugged it back in-- What is that wire? Any thoughts what I did to stop the cool?
Thanks!

Be sure th eheater control valve is working properly, you may have caused that to put hot water into the heater core all of the time. Also check the blend door to be sure it is switching from hot to cold. Look to see if you pinched the vacuum harness that hangs down on top of the dog house, that could cause a problem too

It never occured that I needed to tell someone system needs discharge before opening up. It's shut water off before replacing fauset washers.
Sorry just trying to help

Thanks-- I don't know "Heater control valve" and "blend door". Can you explain a little more? Where located and what I might have done? I'll check the vacuum harness.

Thanks-
Brad

Sounds like Doc is correct with some kind of restriction in the system. We never know the abilities of the people posting in here, so it is hard to know what anyone is capable of. Evacuating/charging the system is something that you can have a shop do, then replace the parts yourself to save money. It is also difficult to accuratly diagnose an a/c problem without high-side readings, that is where the magic happens and it is critical to proper operation. If you haev anymore questions, feel free to email me @ jackson@2carpros. Com

Heater control valve is up by the firewall where the heater hoses connect. It is an inline valve that is vacuum operated and lets hot water flow through the heater core. Blend door is th edoor that directs air from hot (heater core) to cold(evap core)

Hi Guys,

The air in my van is blowing cold through the rear vents and also through the floor vents up front. However, the front vents in the dash are not blowing anything. For a while, they simply worked on the middle and highest speeds. Then they worked intermittently whenever they wanted to! Now they do not work at all. The air is on and works just fine through the other vents. What could be the problem? Is it something we can fix ourselves? We live in Florida and so garages charge an arm and a leg to fix A/C problems because they know you can't live without your A/C here. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

It sounds like you have two different problems. First, the air flow problem is most likely a vacuum leak. The vents that direct the air flow are run by vacuum. If there is a leak, that is what will happen. As far as the fan speed not working, it is either going to be the blower motor resister or the fan relay.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

My Chevy Astro Vans front air vents blow air but not cold. The rear air works fine blowing cold air. Is there a way that I could repair the front air conditioning or is the problem serious enough to take to a repair shop.

Thanks

It sounds like a problem with the blend air door. It determines if you get AC or heat. It is located near the heater core. Check to see if it is working.
