My engine light came on, and I had a display on the dash that read "Engine hot/A.C. Off. After sometime the warnings went off. Now my engine light came back on and has been steady for two weeks. Auto zone provided error code P0442 Evaporative Emission system small leak detected. Does that mean I have to replace the canister purge valve? Or could this be a sensor needing replaced? Or is this really an engine problem?

Hello, I am Danny.

The code P0442 means a small leak/pressure difference in the fuel tank is being detected instead of being totally sealed. It is possibly a leaky o-ring/seal/connection and the best way is to have a smoke test performed. Most auto repair shops can perform this. Basically, a machine administers smoke into the EVAP system to detect the leak(s) I have attached a tutorial showing what is involved. Hope this helps and feel free to ask any questions in needed. Thanks for using 2CarPros.
