Check engine light is on my dash. Most recently I’ve noticed when I’m trying to speed up merging onto freeway or merging with traffic on a road my RPMs revs up to 3,000-4,000 but my car does not speed up. I had a mechanic tell me there’s an 80% chance it’s my throttle body and it needs to be cleaned or new. I also noticed sometimes when I start my car it shakes a little too noticeably and my RPMs will be at 1,000-1,500 and gradually go down as I sit in park.

Hi,

It could be related to the throttle body. It sounds like the transmission is slipping. If the RPMs increase but the vehicle doesn't speed up, that is what is likely happening.

Before anything is done, you need to have the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. The best thing to do is have the can-bus scanned.

CAN stands for controller area network. Basically, the different computers/modules are tied together via a few wires. If there is a code stored, this type of scan will find it regardless of the module storing it. Here is a link that explains how it's done.

If you are unable to have that done, stop at a parts store. Most will provide a basic scan free of charge.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
