My car keeps sputtering whenever you take off and when you're at a stoplight. What would be the problem?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

It could be several different things. First, if the check engine light stays on when the engine is running, you should first scan the computer for diagnostic trouble codes. Here is a quick video of how it's done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but if the car is safe to drive, most parts stores will do it for free.

Next, I would suggest checking the fuel pump pressure to confirm it isn't weak. Here is a link that shows in general how it is done:

Here are the manufacturer's specs for pressure:

Key On Engine Off 35 - 45 psi
Key On Engine Running 30 - 40 psi

Another thing that can cause a misfire or sputtering is an engine vacuum leak. Here is a link that shows how that is done:

Start with checking those things, However, if the check engine light is on, scan it for codes. That can point you in the right directions. If you find any, let me know what they are and I can better direct you.

Take care,
Joe

Welcome back:

No, that isn't normal and based on the vehicle it could be major. Start a new thread related to her vehicle and I can better help.

Take care and let me know what you find on your vehicle.
