Camshaft issue

My check engine light came on so my son checked it with his diagnostic machine and it read that the camshaft valve was open or the camshaft sensor has 2 be replaced. How do I know which one it is?

What I need is the code that he retrieved. With that code, I can tell you which one and provide directions for replacement.
