Cam to crank dots not specified how to line up! How to position ?

So you have a 305 V6? Great heavy engine. Been a while since I have seen one. Timing marks are set so the cam sprocket is down and the crank sprocket is down as well.
The book tells you to line them up in a straight line with the dots together but I recall that puts you 180 degrees out on number one.
