2001 Cadillac DTS 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

my car wont start. I drove to work and the keys to my car would not release from the ignition. The gear stayed in drive. So I took the battery out and finally got the keys out of the ignition, everything in car works, the lights, radio. Its just the car wont start and the gear is still in drive. The battery is fine. Please advise. Never had this problem before. The car was working fine all day.

Column shift or floor shift? It is possible to disconnect the cable at the trans, see if the shifter moves at that point. If it does, then check that the trans shift lever will move. That will lead you to a area to focus on. If you can manually shift the transmission, you can start the vehicle if it is placed in neutral or park. The car will be mobile, but you need a second person under the hood to shift in gear. This can allow you to get it to a repair facility if needed.
