Backingout of driveway wen to go into drive when the shift on my steering column broke. It wouldn't go into any other gear, it was full of play "up & down". Had to turn car off so we could push it to the side, car won't start but when we turn the key it says it's in reverse still.

If the column or shifter itself didn't break it's probably the cable at the bottom of the column that moves the transmission. If you want to put it in park just open your hood and look down on the transmission you'll see where the cable hooks to the trans you can move it to park if you want to try. If not apply your parking brake and leave it like that for a tow truck driver to move to haull it away.
