Hey Lobster & mastertechtim I too am trying to solve this battle of mechanical witts.
I did get as far as replacing the crankshaft sensor AND the sensor under the harmonic balancer (looks like a brake pad). Unfortunately we still get the same old code.

My car is a 1996 Olds Cierra. Giving me the same old stuff!

What next?

We have the problem identified, the tourgue of the engine shaffed a wire causing the failures. It was well hidden and not an easy find.We also replaced the Crank Pos. sensor and was not the problem even though the code id said it was.
Look for any shaffing in or near the wiring harness, our area was near the power steering pump.
Good Luck.
