So today my car went in to my normal garage to be serviced the MOT was passed with only a brake light issue late August, today they tell me the car is dangerous as the rear brakes needs urgently replacing and the cheapest they can do is £318:00. Excuse my ignorance, but should my brakes not be checked during the MOT?
They said the car is not safe to drive. I noticed no issue with the brakes all?

I am in Australia, so I am not 100% sure what the MOT inspection entails, but if it like our road worth inspections, yes the brakes should be inspected, I would get a second opinion on the brakes, for the price quoted I would be thinking that they are replacing the rear rotors as well. If they are not undersized and you have no shudder concerns, these may still be okay and a set of pads are just required. Go get a second opinion and let me know what they say.
