Brakes making howling/grinding noise

A howling/grinding noise coming from back right-hand side wheel area.

Hi Katty,

Does the noise happen all the time or just when you apply the brakes?

If the noise happens all the time and gets louder when you increase in speeds, I would suspect a hub bearing/axle bearing before brakes.

However, if the noise is only there when you hit the brakes, then you may be correct with it is coming from the brakes.

Thanks heaps for your help. I forgot to mention that the noise is there quite loud when in reverse.

Okay. If it is loudest in reverse then that points towards brakes. Either way they are both pretty straight forward repairs. In fact if it is a hub you have to remove the brakes in order to replace it. May be a good idea if you are going to have someone else do it that you have them replace the brakes if it’s the hub because it doesn’t require any more labor since they are taking them off anyway. However based on this reverse information I thinks it’s the brakes.
