Engine Cooling problem
2004 BMW 325 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

low coolant line is occasionally on, but coolant level appears near max level. Some months ago, because coolant was low (and light on) I replaced radiator cap, and solv ed problem, until recently.

Do these caps have a history of requiring occasional replacement?

No, but the expansion tanks do fail and the level sensor is controlled by a float in the tank and it can be the source of your problem. If the expansion tank is original to the car it should be considered as a possible candidate for replacement.
