What causes a chirping noise from the engine while idling. When I accelerate it goes away.

The idler or deflection pulleys are known for making noise, it is probably one of those and/or the tensioner unit too, if it is the spring type tensioner. I usually ignore it until I really need to go in there for a related repair or maintenance issue.
