2001 BMW 325 Reverse no working

I have a 325 BMW turbo station wagon. The reverse gear on the automatic transmission is bearly working. I read on the internet this is a common problem.

Is there aything you would try before overhauling the transmission?

Has anything been done yet? Inspection of the oil is probably the first step, look for stinky, dirty oil. If it is, rebuilding or replacement is probably going to be required if the oil is contaminated. Pulling the pan might reveal broken parts in the pan, and I guess that will tell the tale.
