My truck is binding in reverse, both only front tires are binding, it’s in reverse forward tends to work well, it seems like it is coming from the front transfer case. It is also binding in 4h and 4L in reverse, could it be my differential gear?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

If I understand correctly, it binds in reverse regardless of what drive mode it is in. If that is the case, confirm the front differential is full. Also, I would recommend lifting the front of the vehicle and see if the wheels spin freely forward and back.

As far as binding when in either 4wd mode, that isn't uncommon. However, in 2 wheel drive, it is.

Have you tried to service the transfer case? Is it full?

Here are directions for servicing the transfer case. It shows how to confirm the fluid level is correct. The three attached pictures correlate with these directions.

1. Remove the drain plug and drain the fluid. Clean and reinstall the drain plug.

2. CAUTION: Incorrect fluid fill can result in transfer case failure.

NOTE: The fluid level should be just below the fin plug.

NOTE: Clean the area around the fill plug.

Remove the fill plug, and fill the transfer case.
- The fluid must be just below the fill plug hole. Because you can reach the fluid with a finger does not mean the fluid is at the correct level. Make sure the fluid is level with the filler opening for the correct fluid level.

Another idea for you is to remove the front driveshaft to see if the binding still exist. If it does, then it is something in the front differential or axle joints, or even brakes.

If it changes, then inspect the drive shaft universal joints as well as check the transfer case fluid or service it.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.
