Best winter tires

I live in Maine USA. Are studded tires better than winter tires?

The only real advantage for studded tires is on ice or very hard packed snow. For most other surfaces studs are actually worse as they reduce traction. Studs are also noisy and for the best results you want them on all 4 tires. Personally I would just opt for a nice stud free snow tire unless you have to drive on ice.
