Had changed the head gasket, intake gasket, throttle body, and the intake manifold. New plugs. At first it was idling really high like aggressive high then we took out the electric ignition an put in a distributor an the idle calmed down and still have the backfire. Please help.

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

A backfire can be caused by a few things. First, take a look through this link to see if there is anything helpful.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/engine-backfires-while-running

Next, I need to know if the cylinder head was checked for cracks. 1999 and 2000 are known for the cylinder head cracking between cylinders 3 and 4. Make sure there is no indication of a leak. I would also recommend checking the compression to see if there is an issue.

Let me know,
Joe

Thanks for getting back. The engine is a 4.0, straight six.
And everything you have mentioned we had checked and everything was okay. No cracks with cylinders, and the compression in it was good. No leaks anywhere.
