When starting the engine I have to rev the engine quite a bit before the alternator light goes out. I have just changed the alternator as the old one was doing the same thing.

Welcome to 2CarPros. The first thing I would do is test the battery for any issues. Next check that the battery cables at both ends are clean and tight this includes any body or chassis grounds. Corrosion can cause this as it requires the higher output from the alternator to "burn through" the corrosion, it can also cause it because there is higher resistance in the system.
