2001 Saturn SC2 w/ reverse issues

My wife drives a 2001 Saturn SC2. It has a 4 cylinder engine automatic. It has 160, XXX miles on the trans.

Lately she has been having problems getting the car to go into reverse. So I drove it for awhile and sure enough, the car drives fine except when trying to get it into reverse. I could drive in reverse no problem, but shifting from park into reverse and from drive into reverse is horrible. When it does finally catch it hits hard.

There is no problem going from park into drive or reverse into drive. Just stinking reverse. Does anyone have any help for me?

Edit: forgot to add that it is getting worse and close to not going into reverse at all. To coax it into reverse we have to give it gas and it just hits all the harder when it does finally go.

No one has any thoughts on this? It is quite weird.

However, I have an update on it.

I took the car and started driving it and she took mine, so now when I go into reverse it is fine.

I figured out that she is not waiting for the car to be in an idle before she puts it into reverse. She starts the car and almost immediately shifts it into reverse. She probably also has the AC on which brings the RPMs up more too.

So by just waiting for the engine to calm down and not having the AC on when I start the car has fixed 90% of the occurances. Problem is if I cannot coax the motor to idle around 1,000 it will still shift hard. Not near as hard as what she was getting it to do. But any help at all on this would be great. Thanks.
