2001 Explorer Sport Trac loss of power

I have a problem that has everyone stumped. First, I have 42,000 miles on my 2001 Sport Trac. I was driving 60 mph at 3000 rpm with cruise control on. Suddenly, the rpm dropped to 2500 and the speed slowed to 50. There was nothing I could do to get the rpm back up past 2500. I limped home with the rpm now peaking at 2300. The next morning, when I started it up, I noticed that in neutral, it would not rev past 3000 rpm. And I still had the same loss of power. Has anyone else had this problem or know what is causing it?

I also have a 2001 Explorer sport trac ( 62000 miles)that had a similar problem. It turned out to be a leak in my crankcase breather tube assy. It now gets over 3000 RPM's again but not when I'm in park or neutral.

Does anybody know if there is a engine shutoff function to try and protect the engine in either of these states? I'm confused why I can't get over 3000 RPM's in park or neutral.
