Will not start if engine light is ON

Sometimes my car don't want to start. First thing I check for, was spart. There was no spark, so I check to see if the coil was getting power, which it was. I didn't not see a ground pulse so I change the distributor. It still wouldn't start sometimes. What I realize is that when the engine light stays on it will not start. Would like to know if it could be the main relay or is it the pcm?

Hello,

Since it does not start when the engine light is illuminated, it must be triggering the no start.
Check to see what is the code for the engine light. As it can help with the diagnostics.

If it were the main relay, then it is likely would not start at all. I have included the main relay testing procedure below, so you can be sure.
