Hello,

Engine is in drive and idle, but repeatedly struggles and jumps/jerks/surges (not sure what to call it) with A/C on, stops and resumes normal idle when A/C gets turned off, and even with A/C on but in neutral or park it does not do the surging. Throttle body was cleaned at local Toyota shop, but now engine is struggling and on occasion during driving (at around 45 and especially up hills) with or without A/C on. Torque converter was replaced 4 years ago so I'm not thinking transmission. More like Idle control valve, though the local shop cleaned my whole throttle body 2 weeks ago. No previous accident beforehand, and car has never been in an accident. Not sure what it is! Just hoping it won't break the bank to fix!

Hi,

Was it doing this prior to the service that was done? Also, the idea that it happens when the A/C is on and in gear does sound like it is related to the throttle body or the throttle control motor. However, that should have set a diagnostic trouble code. Is the check engine light staying on? If it is, you should have the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes.

Here is a video showing it being done:

If possible, have the shop test the throttle body / throttle control motor. I attached the directions below for doing it. It will require a scan tool that can communicate with and actuate different functions.

Let me know if you have questions and if there are any codes.

Take care,

Joe
