It's all over the CV boots, where it's heavier, but travels all the way up. This stuff doesn't even feel like grease and it looks like it's got small gravel in it.

My guess is that if you look clese enough you'll find a boot that is split and spinning the grease out. Just debris kicking up while driving is probably where the grit is coming from.

Maybe the problem is the rack and pinion and not the power steering pump? Usually when you replace the power steering pump, the info says to flush the system, get the old fluid out of it. In the past I have taken return line loose from the pump, aim the return line into container, rotate the pump pulley by hand to circulate the old fluid out. When the fluid runs clear, the old fluid is gone. I guess the new fluid is clear and not colored? That will also show you that there is circulation. If no circulation, maybe power steering hoses have a problem? I haven't looked up your power steering pump operation. If the info I posted isn't applicable, I'll find more info.

Just to add, you have to keep adding fluid when you flush it. The hi pressure hose is usually a threaded fitting, the return line is usually low pressure and uses a hose clamp.

I cannot find any place to check the power steering fluid level. I read an article about some GM vehicles having electric steering of some sort. Is that on this car or am I just overlooking the check tube.

There is a speed sensor located in the steering column or the rear of the pump that has gone bad, this sensor tells the steering system how much pressure to release at a particular speed. Please check it out and get back to us so it can help others

Very hard to turn steering wheel when not stepping on gas. Turns normal when stepping on gas, whether in park or driving. When turning wheel, it makes a "shhh" noise, or like an air sound. That's the best I can describe it. Also, sound comes from each of the front tire areas, rather then the pump. Dealership changed power steering pump and it made no difference. One place says bad pump and one place says bad rack and pinion (but there's no loose turning/slipping) PLEASE HELP ME.

It does sounds like it could be the rack but I have seen where the steering wheel angle sensor goes out and causes the same thing. To test the pump you need a flow test

Here is the location, its not to easy to replace but it fixed the last car we had in the shop.

Check out the diagrams (Below)

Please let us know what you find.

Cheers

Can the pressure and flow test be performed by myself, or will I have to take it to a mechanic?

Also, how long does it normally take to have the rack changed?

I appreciate your response(s)

If the dealership told you that replacing the pump would fix your steering problem then I would take it back there and make them fix it for no additional charge. Changing a rack and pinon takes different amounts of time depending on your rack set up.

Ok. So my best bet would be to take it and have the pressure and flow test done. Then, if all is well in that aspect, to have them check out the rack and pinion?

Also, could there be a lose hose or something that's possibly disconnected from the rack? There's no leak or anything.

The flow pressure test will see if the pump is good and if its good and the sensor is good you have a bad rack
