No throttle response

My 2008 canry le has no throttle response, I am deployed and my wife told me that the car battery had died. She hooked up jumper cables to try and start it but the cables were bad and sparked and melted. So she bought new ones and the car started right up. But now the check engine light is on and the car runs fine other than it not have any throttle response. It will go into all gear and move but only at idle speed. Any help would be appreciated, thanks
