Coolant boils but temperature gauge says temp is normal. Then when it's hot enough to shut down, the gauge shoots up into the red and the light pops on. We just replaced the thermostat to see if that was the problem but it's still occurring. What is going on with my car!

You should try flushing the radiator and the engine block to see if that helps. As far as how things are working, you may want to replace the temp sending unit, Maybe then your temp gauge will work properly.
