What would make a knocking noise while turning the steering wheel?

While driving, if we turn the steering wheel slightly, it doesn't make a noise. But if we do a full turn, whether to the left or to the right, it makes a knocking sound. What could be causing this?

Thank you!

The most common cause is binding upper strut mounts. Hold your fingertips lightly on the top of one of the front coil springs, then have a helper slowly turn the steering wheel. The springs should turn smoothly with the wheel. If you feel it wind up, then spring free and turn, the mounts are binding and must be replaced.
