My car has been leaking power steering fluid slowly for a few weeks. I took it to a repair shop and they scanned it saying I needed rack and pinon as well as struts (which I wasn't there for the second suggestion) and gave me a price in the thousands. I am curious if by scanning the car they can really tell what's wrong with, if the rack and pinon is possible, and how much does that usually cost to replace? I feel because I am woman I being treated differently.

Good evening,

Scanning will tell you nothing for both issues. There are and never will be any codes for these components.

Did you have leak verified and identified? Hoses are common as well as the rack and pinion, but it sounds like they are guessing on your dime.

As far as the struts, if they are leaking, then yes, it would be a good time to replace them. Tire wear would be a good indicator when they are worn out.
