When it has been raining the boot release keeps clicking and the boot latch releases it's grip and the boot opens

Seems there is a leak somewhere and rain water is getting to the controls to trigger the boot latch.

Thanks for your reply.
Is there a way I can check on this without spending a fortune on investigations at a garage?

Yes, this job would most probably cost a limb if you get it done at a garage.

There are many variants of the Focus, which do you have? I need to know the vehicle model to be able to understand the most likely areas.
