Sometimes on start up it will flicker a few times before staying on. This started one week ago. Does this light indicate potential airbag service needs? How can I determine if it is just an electrical short vs an actual air bag issue? Due to safety issues is it advisable to have this checked by a dealer instead of an independent mechanic?

Hello, I'm Danny.

Yes, that usually means an SRS- supplemental restraint system which includes airbags code is stored in your vehicles computer. First thing to do is check for any codes stored. If you don't have access to a scanner or code reader most auto parts stores have a tool loaner program and can rent you one. Here is a tutorial showing how to check for codes:

Just be sure that any scanner or code reader you use has SRS capability. Get back to us with any code information and we can then properly diagnose. If no codes are stored then it could possibly be an electrical issue. You don't necessarily have to go to a dealership to have this checked any independent shop can read diagnostic codes and for less then dealer rates. Hope this helps and thanks for using 2CarPros.
