It only thumps at 35-40 mph and at 70 mph, only on front drivers' side and not when I'm braking. Also, it is worse going around curves to the right, but it is ok when making a turn. Steering wheel has started to shake a little recently. Brakes work fine. When it does it, it almost feels like I have a flat tire (I don't). What could it be?

Sounds typical of a broken belt in one of the front tires. Have them inspected at a tire and alignment shop. If you try to do it yourself, beware of sharp points sticking out from the steel belts which is rather common. Your hand will smart if you get poked by them.
