Whenever we turn the steering wheel left or right you can hear a faint "thump" sound. When we also break, the car vibrates a bit while we keep breaking. Is there any connection? What do you think?

No connection 2 different problems, the vibration when breaking is a warped front rotor or rotors. The thump noise is the Intermediate shaft, very common problem, the u-joint on the end of the shaft binds and freezes causing a clunk/thump noise. You can lube the shaft, but I would replace it. Lubeing it is a temporary fix.
