2002 Ford Focus Wagon. At times the push-to engage-gear knob jams up and needs considerable force to push it to engage reverse or forward gear. What gives?

Most of the time all is well but sometimes it is difficult to press in the knob on the top of the gear handle and engage the transmission. Use of force usually corrects but lately it has been happening frequently and I would like to know what is happening and how to put it right. Is it a major expense repair?

Try spraying some wd-40 around it to loosen it up
