Cadillac 2002 overheats on occasion and check coolant light stay on

If it is using coolant, and overheating periodically, I would not spend any money toward addressing it until you have a diagnosis including a block check for combustion gases in the cooling system. If the block check is positive, you have an internal leak that could mean $$$ to repair. It is not uncommon for an overheating northstar to have internal concerns.
