Potential issue with differential?

The engine of my Mazda Tribute (2001) is letting out what I could best describe as a "whining" noise when running. It relates to the transmission I believe, as the RPM increases, so does the volume of the "whine". After a bit of driving, the sound fades away. Is it possible that this could be an issue with the differential?

A differential noise would not fade away. The noise is transmisson related and more information is required for us to understand.
