Is my transmission possibly going out?

My 01 mazda protege has been running fine since I bought it. When I bought it the check engine light was on but I had it checked it was just a random misfire and I did a basic tune up (replaced spark plugs and changed oil, etc) One day it started blinking on me and then the car started to lose power so I pushed the gas peddle a few times and it went back to normal. Well today I was going down the interstate and it did it again only this time no matter how much I pushed the gas it would not get back to speed. It will rev like it is going to start getting speed but never did it kept slowing down like I had taken my foot off the gas all together. I had to pull off the road and have it toed home. The guy who toed it for me said it sounded like this transmission. Could this the problem or something else?

If the engine was reving but the car wasn't accellerating, it does sound related to the trans. Make sure the fluid is clean and full first. After that, since the light was blinking, there should be a trouble code stored in the computer that will help you identify where the problem was coming from. Have that scanned to check.
