2001 hyundai elantra no power will not go over 20 mph making a put putt noise out tailpipe check engine light flashing what could it be?

Hello,

There could be a number of reasons you are having low power output. It could be due to a plugged air filter, worn out mass air flow sensor, weak fuel pump. One of the common reasons is a dirty throttle actuator. Clean out the throttle bore can improve drivability.

Since the check engine light is illuminated, the best course of action would be to scan and retrieve the code(s). This can help with the diagnostics.
You can simply take the vehicle to your local auto parts store (if it can be driven safely). They can scan and provide you with the codes.
