Thank you so much, it turned out that the spark plug was removed but not replaced and then put back in without being properly tightened. I replaced the plug and wire, and it's running good!

I have a 2001 ford taurus and driving the other day it overheated. When I got home ( being mechanically enclined ) I found that the fans were working, had water, and oil levels were fine but upon further inspection I found that both little nozzels comming from the reservoir tank were compltely clogged! I unglogged them and ran the car and no overheating! Q#1-could that have been the initial problem from the start? Q#2- what can be the misfire problem now after overheating? Please help!

The plugging sounds like the cooling system may have needed serviced. As far as the miss, determine which cylinder is missing. The check engine light should be on, so scan it to determine which one is missing. Pull the plug check it and check the compression. You may have taken out a headgasket.

I know this could be a number of things - spark plug, plug wire, coil, bad or clogged injector, etc.

Our family is dealing with economy/financial issues and I need to fix this myself, if at all possible.

We bought this car with approx. 12K miles and I don't believe we have ever changed the spark plugs and wires.

Based on your experience and the information I provided above, how would you proceed to troubleshoot/diagnose the problem?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

It's a miracle more misfires arent occurring! Start with the basics, new plugs wires and filters. Ford puts in 100,000 mile tune up parts, you have exceeded that!
Remove the plug and inspect it, check the gap, it has to be way off! Test wires, resistance is 10, 00 ohms per ft. Or just go ahead and replace em, they need it!

I have a 2001 Ford Taurus, that has the check engine light on. It's been on for about a month now. I took it to an auto parts store and they hooked it up to their OBDII scanner. It showed Misfire on Cylinder 1 and Bad Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit. Bought the camshaft position sensor and replaced it. Car still idles rough, and pops on acceleration. Took it back to the auto parts store, and they hooked it up again and it's still showing Misfire on Cylinder 1 and Bad Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit. I heard that it could also be the coil pack causing this problem. Also the Check Engine light flashes occasionally. What do you guys think?

Flashing check engine light is an indication of a misfire and shouldn't be driving with it flashing

check cylinder #1 spark plug and if the coil firing if not firing remove and replace the coil
(common issue )

I've had an ongoing problem with my Taurus. The check engine light is on. I thought perhaps I had a bad plug or wire, so I replaced the wire set and plugs. No change. The coil was replaced not long ago by my mechanic. The problem occurs at stops. The engine runs very rough, the check engine light flashes and getting back up to speed is EXTREMELY sluggish. Once I'm back up to speed the car runs normally but the check engine lite stays on. Since most of the electrical parts have been replaced, I have to think it could be a clogged fuel injector or some other fuel system problem. I took it to AutZone and they said the code was "Misfire on cylinder 5." Anyway any feedback is appreciated! Thanks

You may want to check your upper and lower intake manifold for some kind of obstruction or leaking gasket. The clogged fuel injector theory also sounds plausible. One other thing is check the ignition coil again. Take it off and check it for cracks. Good Luck.
