Hi everyone. I am having an issue with my S-10 and hopefully someone can help me out.

I have a 2001 S-10 4X4 Ext. Cab with the 4.3 vortec motor with 120k miles and auto tranny. When I get the truck up to about 65-70 MPH, it starts making a very loud winding noise. The noise is coming somewhere from the front right side I believe. If I let up on the gas, the noise gets louder. If I get back on the gas, the noise gets softer.

Now, what I have found is that if while this is happening, if I pull over to the side of the road and put the truck in nuetral and roll about 5-10 mph and then engage the 4WD the truck makes a loud clunk noise and then the noise is gone. I then put back into 2WD and then it is good to go for a short time before it starts to happen again at about 65-70 MPH. So it seems like it is trying to or slipping to engage into 4WD automatically? Has anyone ever experienced or heard of this?

Also, my 4WD is a touch panel engaging system just in case that information is relevant.

If anyone has any suggestions or knows what is going on, I would greatly appreciate the help. Thank you much.

Check to make sure t case and axle are engaging/disengaging fully first. It kind of sounds like it's not.

After I put physically put it into 4WD after I pull off the road, I do put it into drive and it does got into full 4WD. I then do the same thing when disengaging it. So ya, that seems to be working ok.

Thanks.

If that seem sto be ok then you might check your automatic lockups on the front wheels see if they are disengaging.
