Vehicle was driven and gear shift worked properly. However, when my husband started the tahoe tonight and tried to put the car into drive, the gear shift was extremely loose and would not go into any gear!

This sounds like the shifter cable either broke or came off the shifter or manual valve on the side of the unit.

You will most likely need to lift the vehicle and put it on jack stands or slide underneath and check the operation of the shifter as someone move it.

However, I would put it on stands just so there is no risk of it moving.

I included the process below on how to replace and adjust this cable as I am pretty sure this has broken and will need replacement.

Please let us know what other questions you have on this. Thanks
