I have a Toyota HZJ97R 4X4 landcrusier and the 3 wires have been pulled out of the speed sensor at the gearbox. Can anyone tell me how the 3 wires should go back in the plug, ie. The colours and position in plug.

See pic, the pins should be numbered 1,2,3 and I have included the entire wiring diagrams for the transmission and the VSS. Also, this guide can help you test the connections.

Check out the images (below). Let us know how it goes

Hi

Have a further question. In relation to the plug which is pin 1, 2, & 3 as not numbered when I look at it? I have no bits of the cable left on the plug side as it was pulled completely out.

The plugs are normally numbered as if looking front on and left to right. Here is a diagram I found which should be the VSS connector. Check out the images (below). Let us know if you need anything else.
