I bought this car about 1 month ago from a private seller found in gumtree. It was running smoothly until last thursday. Suddenly started running roughly on friday and it tends to stop specially while changing gear. Next day I took it to a workshop, thinking may need servicing but after they checked it, they found there is something wrong with the motor head because there was no coolant in the coolant tank and car wasn't looked after properly and it was overheated. They said need the head inspection and costs roughly around couple of thousand to change the head. Is there any cheap and best solution for my car?

First, what is wrong with the head? Is it only a head gasket?

They says cylinder head gasket(r &r) has some problem, head will need to be removed for inspection and vrs kit may need to be replaced.
500$ for removing head, & 300 for inspection. After that vrs kit and other may be more costly.

That sounds expensive for what they are doing. Have you considered having it looked at by another tech? I'm not sure where you live, but here, in PA, you may have 600 into the entire job.
