Could my 2000 mercury cougar just need a new transmission sensor or a new transmission?

On my way home, my car I guess you could say******* a little and then my o/d off symbol went flashing, I tried to shut it off with my button but wouldnt do anything. I had it checked and the mechanic said it was the transmission, however I found forums where people had the same problem but it was only the sensor. Im hoping if I replace the sensor it would fix it? Thanks for the help.

To find out need to have a scan done to find fault codes there are several sensors
