I was driving down the road and hit a puddle I didn't see. Afterward the car sounded a little different and minutes later just shut off. I tried restarting it and it would not crank, but when I turned the key the radio and lights still came on. I had it towed and looked at and they told me the engine locked up and the only way to fix it was to replace the engine. Someone mentioned that their car was running fine and cut off and they just added oil and it started again and said that newer model cars have a safety feature that causes the car to cut off in order to prevent messing up the engine. Would just adding oil to my car fix the problem of it not starting?

I've never heard of a system like that. Have the starter and battery checked. Check the engine oil. (Overfilling the oil can be very bad for the engine.). I can't see simply running through a small puddle causing an engine to lock up. Even one as old as yours.
