99 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Banging when in drive.
Let me start with this. I am NO mechanic by any means. My problem is I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4WD with the 4.0 liter engine that has been banging when in drive and going down the road. It happens on hills and on the flat and it does not seem to matter at what speed it is going. The banging is almost like an older model vehicle when you would put it in reverse and would make that bang from the tranny except this happens when it is in drive and and it is moving. The problem is intermittent and does not happen all the time. I have been checking the fluids every day and the motor runs great aside from a very slight lifter tap. I just had the transmission serviced, but this did not fix the problem, and the mechanic which I trust says the tranny is working great. I recently noticed that the exhaust is getting loud from the area near the catalytic converter. Could the banging be a exhaust problem? If not any ideas?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

CAN YOU PINPOINT THE LOCATION?

I DON'T KNOW YOUR SYSTEM---BUT IS IT IN 4X4 AND SHOULDN'T BE, EVEN IF SAYS IT AIN'T (NOT GAUGING IT BY IDIOT LIGHTS)?

IF YOU HAVE LOCKING HUBS, IS ONE STUCK LOCKED IN?

IF YOU JUMP ON A DIRT ROAD AND ENGAGE 4X4---DOES IT MAKE THE RACKET?

HOW DO YOUR MOTOR MOUNTS AND TRANNY MOUNTS LOOK?

I'D "THROW OUT THERE" POSSIBLE TORQUE CONVERTER PROBLEM?

WHAT ABOUT SIMPLE STUFF, LIKE THE PICS I'M GIVING YOU BELOW--REMEMBER WITH 4WD, YOU HAVE 'EM GOING TO BOTH AXLES

Thanks CJ MEDEVAC

The location is the right behind the front seats underneath like as if the when you get that bang in an older model car when you put it in reverse.

It is in 2 wheel and I do not have locking hubs. I will try the 4x4 on dirt tomorrow to test it.

My mechanic looked at the motor mounts and tranny mounts and they check out.

The torque converter sounds like a good possibility.

I will check out the axles in the morning when it is light out as well, but my mechanic said the axles all look good.

Thank you for your help.
