1999 Chevrolet S-10 running out of ideas

My truck died on me the other day while driving, at first I thought I ran out of gas (i was low on gas and was on my way to get gas) after walking the 2 miles round trip with a gas can full I put about a gal. Of gas in the car. Still didn't start. The engine would not turn over when trying to start, with some research and asking around thought it was the alternator going out. I took the alternator out, tested it. And it failed. I bought a new alternator, put it in the truck, and still nothing. It won't start same problem engine won't turn over just clicks. I tried to jump it even though it is a newer battery checked fuses and everything checks out. I'm running out of ideas as to what the problem is. As someone with virtually no auto IQ I have no idea where to go. Also, as a struggling college student don't have the money to tow it to a mechanic for repairs either
