Is a 99 Malibu 2.4 dohc an interference engine? Reason being, I had my water pump done last week. When I get it back, the car is idling higher than normal and cuts off when I slow down to a stop. The very next day there is a loud knock noise when I crank it and drove it to work. Cut off multiple times. I took it back and the mechanic said I had slung a rod from being a half a quart low on oil. I feel like he is trying to get over

Is this the Quad 4 engine? If so, it is an interference engine. And being 1/2 quarts low on oil will not spin a rod bearing.

Yes, it is an interference engine. However, that small amount of oil wouldn't have caused the engine problems. Heck, my sis in law just stopped and asked if she needed oil. She was 3 quarts low. No that isn't a good thing to do, but the engine is fine.

So, could he have been the one to mess the timing up? And possibly bend the valves. Or cause it too run awful. Sling a rod?

Well. Your water pump is run by a timing chain. The chain tensioner needs to be removed to complete the job. Did the car ever run properly for you after you got it back?

No, it didn't run properly on the way home. And the very next morning it was knocking.
