1998 Volkswagen GTI My car wont start

Any time I start my car I realise that the sound from the engine does not sound well and the smoke from the car is black. Also the sound from the exhusts sounds like a bomb if the car gets hot it goes off by its self and when starting it becomes difficult why.

If it's the 2.8L VR6, could be a chain problem?

Any check engine light on? Any Fault codes?

Black smoke usually indicates the engine is running rich (too much gas). Have you checked fuel pump pressure?
