Starter would not stop engaging and it started smoking

My 1998 toyota corolla wouldn't shut off after I turned the key off, and the starter kept turning over and then it started smoking with an electrical burning smell for a few days my car wouldn't turn right over. It clicked hesitated then started. Tonight I got in started it drove, parked it, and restarted it and it clicked started

The ignition switch seems to be bad causing the problems described and that is where I would suggest starting with.

The starter motor could have been damaged by the process and replacement is necessary.
