98 Saturn SL2 HELP!

I have a 98 Saturn SL2. This week it started stalling first when I had been stopped for a while and most recently while driving. It makes a click click noise just before it stalls and the RPM go up to 31/2 - 4 and then below 0. Sometimes it didn't stall it just did what I just described and re-engaged. After sitting for a while the car always starts up again. The check engine light came on after it stalled the last time however after it restarted the light was gone. Any clues?
