I have a 1998 Ford Explorer Sport. Yesterday the check engine light came on. We got a diagnostic code of P1762, Manf. Con. Trans; what in the world does this mean? We have been told it is the switch on the overdrive, but the switch works fine. We cannot afford to go to a repair shop right now. Please help!

This code tells you that the transmission is trying to shift into a gear but not getting the correct output speed for that gear. Meaning it expects to see a certain RPM of the output and it is not seeing that, so it suspects it is not going into the correct gear.

This specific code says there is no 2nd or 5th gear.

There could be a speed sensor issue but if this were the case then you would actually have 2nd and 5th gear, the PCM would just not see the correct speed so that would be a sensor issue.

Otherwise, this is going to be an internal issue which would be the overdrive band is not holding the drum and causing the gear to not engage.

One sign of this would be the fluid. Let's check the fluid and let me know the condition and level of it.

Let me know what you find with all this, and we can go from there. Thanks
